Syria reacts to Ban Ki-moon's accusations over civilian deaths

IT WASN’T ME6 hours ago Assad Blames U.S. for Syrian Truce Collapse

Ban on Tuesday used his farewell address to the General Assembly in NY to urge world leaders to end Syria's devastating conflict. USA officials blame Russian Federation for a strike this week on a Syrian Red Crescent aid convoy.

Mr Obama, in his final speech to the UN General Assembly, lamented that the world has become safer and more prosperous at the same time that nations are struggling with a devastating refugee crisis, terrorism and a breakdown in basic order in the Middle East. And Colombia, with help from the U.S., Norway, Cuba and other countries, has brought an end to Latin America's longest-running insurgency.

Still, he stuck faithfully to his insistence that diplomatic efforts and not military solutions are the key to resolving Syria's civil war and other conflicts.

Every year, the U.N. chief hosts a formal lunch for the presidents, prime ministers and potentates attending the annual ministerial meeting of the U.N. General Assembly.

In the speech at the UN, President Obama warned U.S. voters against embracing isolationism and ultra-nationalism in November's Presidential election. His tough talk illustrated how little progress has been made in reconciling the two powers' diverging interests that have allowed the Syria crisis to continue to fester.

He added, however, that after 10 years as the top United Nations official, he is "more convinced than ever that we have the power to end war, poverty and persecution".

Nine million people alone have been displaced by the six-year conflict in Syria while more than four million others have fled the war-torn country.

The Leaders' Summit - co-hosted by the USA, the UN Secretary General, Ethiopia, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Sweden and Jordan - sought concrete pledges in three areas: improved access to education and job opportunities for refugees, resettlement and other forms of admission, and humanitarian finance. Obama called on wealthier nations to step up, adding that "we all have to do more".

He called for the world to impose "consequences" on North Korea for its latest nuclear test.

In other moments, Obama seemed to be addressing the USA electorate and the deep fissures that have been opened by the presidential election.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he is confident of reaching the magic number of 55 percent before the next United Nations climate conference, which starts November 7 in Marrakech, Morocco.

"Things like language. The right to work is another issue, so it's way beyond education", said Woo.

"The world is too small for us to be able to build a wall and prevent it from affecting our own societies", Obama said.

Mr Obama said the world was more secure if leaders were prepared to help people in need.

Obama said that during the last eight years that he has been part of the United Nations as president, he said he saw the world's economy improve and several conflicts resolved, including a nuclear deal with Iran, the upcoming end of Colombia's decades-long conflict with the FARC rebel group and diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba re-established.
