India and Pakistan Keep up Mutual Accusations on Terrorism

"In fact, if India considers revoking the treaty, it is itself signalling the same to be an act of war or a hostile act against Pakistan".

The 1960 World Bank-brokered water treaty allocated three eastern rivers to India and three western rivers to Pakistan.

Pakistan reminded the World Bank that the treaty gives the bank an important role in establishing a court of arbitration by facilitating the process of appointment of three judges, called Umpires, to the Court.

Held amidst heightened tension between the India and Pakistan, the meeting also made a decision to set up a inter- ministerial task forces to go into the details and working of the Treaty with a "sense of urgency", senior government sources said.

According to Indian media, New Delhi ruled out cancelling the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan but is looking for ways of increasing its use of waters that flow from India but are controlled by Pakistan. So, the water of the three rivers (Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab) will remain in their basin and India can not divert that to other areas due to geographical reasons. "Moreover, Pakistan has never given us this status", Ficci Secretary General A Didar Singh told PTI. He said there is no need to import Indian movies to Pakistan and a free trade policy with India. He said unilateral revocation of the treaty could pose a threat to Pakistan and its economy. He said we have prepared a dossier in this regard which will be shared with P-5 countries, the World Bank and others to warn India that this is what is likely to happen and we must persuade or pressurize New Delhi not to do so otherwise consequences are very clear.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with officials on Monday, saying India should use more of the rivers' resources, a source speaking on the condition he was not named, and with knowledge of the meeting told Reuters.

Federal Ministers Nisar Ali and Ishaq Dar, army chief General Raheel Sharif, National Security Advisor Nasser Janjua, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, Director General Military Operations and senior civil and military officials attended the meeting.

Divided between India and Pakistan since 1947, the flashpoint of Kashmir lies at the heart of the countries' rivalry. The meeting came as India weighed its options to hit back at Pakistan in the aftermath of the Uri terror attack that left 18 soldiers dead, triggering demands that the government scrap the water-sharing deal to mount pressure on the country. "We would once again strongly urge the Government of Pakistan to take seriously its commitment not to allow terrorist attacks against India from its soil and territory under its control".

The former commissioner expressed fears that if the Indus Water Treaty ended then neighboring arch-rival may build up dams on Jhelum and Chenab rivers.
