Landslides kill 12 in Indonesian's Bali, more rain expected

Kintamani landslide

"The extreme rain that occurred all day on Thursday has triggered landslides in three villages and 12 people have died", disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Twelve people, including at least two children, have been killed in a series of landslides across Bali as heavy rain continues to inundate the popular tourist destination, emergency services say.

The landslide flattened homes in Bali.

In December, 29 people died and 19 other were missing when floods and landslides struck Garut, a western region of Indonesia's main island of Java.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said Saturday that incessant rains in the past five days caused rivers on Sumbawa Island to break their banks and inundate seven sub-districts in West Nusa Tenggara province.

A further landslide in the Subaya village on Friday killed one person, bringing the total to 13.

Heavy downpours were blamed for the disaster in Bulurejo village of Karanganyar district, Risky A, senior official at the provincial disaster management agency said.

Kalak said more heavy rain was falling on Friday and people in the area should be aware that the steep slopes meant it was particularly vulnerable to landslides.

Past year at least five people were killed and 100,000 were forced to flee their homes after floods swept through Bali's neighbouring island West Nusa Tenggara, and the Belitung region to the east of Bali and Sulawesi in the north.
