Which Democratic Senators Voted to Confirm Rex Tillerson?

WASHINGTON DC- JANUARY 11 Former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of State testifies during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

The U.S. Senate has confirmed former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, revealing "just how much fossil fuel industry money has corrupted Congress", as climate group 350.org put it.

The nomination of Mr Tillerson, the former chief executive of ExxonMobil who has never served in government, advanced by a vote of 56 to 43, with four Democrats joining all 52 Republicans in support.

Tillerson started out with a sly joke, apologizing for arriving nearly 30 minutes late because he'd been attending a prayer breakfast led by President Donald Trump.

Other Trump cabinet nominations continue to advance in the Senate, with the Republican majority brushing aside impotent and largely theatrical protests by the Democrats, who would happily confirm the vast majority of the nominees but fear the popular reaction.

Senator Ben Cardin, the Foreign Relations Committee's top Democrat, said he was afraid that Tillerson would be a "yes man" and would not be able to stop President Donald Trump from practicing a wrong-headed foreign policy. Six Democratic senators, including Virginia's Mark Warner, crossed party lines to vote for him.

"We don't all feel the same way" about Trump, he said.

Tillerson will take office with the weakest support in the Senate of any secretary of state in USA history.

Environmentalists opposed Tillerson before and after his nomination, citing his career in oil and natural gas and Russian business ties.

"Secretary Tillerson. You bring the unique skills and deep, deep insights - and I've gotten to see it firsthand - into foreign diplomacy our nation needs to foster stability and security in a world too often trapped, and right now it's trapped, in violence and in war", Trump said.

Tillerson, who's used to dealing with the most sensitive issues in the world's toughest venues, surely would have had a better handle on the moratorium's optics.

Freshly confirmed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson got a warm welcome Thursday on his first day on the job, charming his new employees with a joke about needing all the prayers he can get.

Pressed by Democrats in his Senate confirmation hearing in January, however, Mr Pruitt said he disagreed with Mr Trump's earlier claims that global warming is a hoax created by the Chinese to harm the economic competitiveness of the United States. Then, last Monday, Sen. Condoleeza Rice, by contrast, was approved by an 85-13 vote, Henry Kissinger by 78-7 and Dean Acheson by 83-6.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Tillerson said strangers sent him messages of encouragement during the confirmation process, which he described as a stark reminder that he now works for all Americans.
