Bodies Recovered off Greek Island of Lesbos, 1 Woman Saved

Migrant Boat Sinks Off Greece's Lesbos, at Least Eight Dead

At least 16 people, including two children, drowned after an inflatable boat carrying refugees and migrants sank off Greece's Lesbos island, authorities said on Monday.

Nine bodies were recovered in Greek territory and another seven in Turkish waters, Greek and Turkish coastguard officials said.

Up to mid-day local time in Greece, 12 bodies were recovered from the sea, including a child, while a pregnant woman was rescued and transferred immediately to the hospital on the island. She told Greek authorities she had been among roughly 25 people who had set sail late Sunday night from the Turkish coast heading to Lesbos. Two survivors, one of whom is pregnant, were from Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the agency said. According to information from the Greek coast guard authorities, the Turkish coast guard received distress calls from the vessel which was in trouble but did not specify its location, and they duly informed their Greek counterparts.

At least 15 bodies were recovered by vessels from Greece's navy and the EU's Frontex agency on Monday.

There have been fewer of these deadly accidents this year following an accord between the European Union and Turkey reached in March 2016 that has curtailed the influx of migrants.

Despite an EU-Turkey deal reached in March past year, asylum seekers still try to reach relatively prosperous Europe, although at a significantly reduced rate of 20 each day, according to the UNHCR. It was unclear what type of smuggling vessel was used Monday, or how it ran into trouble.

At least 173,000 people, mostly Syrians, landed in Greece in 2016.

Migrants and refugees get on a ferry to Turkey at the port of Mytilene in Lesvos, Greece on October 5, 2016.
