Fitbit solves its first murder

Husband Claims a Home Intruder Killed His Wife, But Her Fitness Tracker May Just Be His Undoing

At the time of her death, Dabate told police that his wife was murdered by a "tall, obese man" that broke into their home and chased Connie into the basement before shooting her dead.

Craig Stedman, the CT district attorney, said that using a FitBit to investigate crime was unusual - but that the device could provide solid evidence.

Picture of happiness: Richard and Connie Dabate with their two children months before Connie was gunned down in her home two days before Christmas in 2015.

Police said he initially told them he had just returned home at around 9am after dropping off his two sons when he was attacked by a home intruder.

More than a year after her murder, investigators used those FitBit records - along with other evidence culled from text messages, emails, and social media accounts - to charge the man with felony murder, tampering with physical evidence and making false statements following his wife's death. A swabbing of its handle grip found Mr. Dabate's DNA, along with the DNA of an unidentified person.

At 8:46, data from the Fitbit showed that Connie left to drive for a spinning class at the local YMCA. According to the investigators, between 9:18 am and 10:05 am, Connie walked a total distance of 1,217 feet, which was deemed freaky, considering that the distance between Connie's vehicle and the basement is 125 feet.

On the night of the murder, Richard was found in his home with his arm and leg secured to a folding chair with a zip tie, according to the Hartford Courant.

A masked intruder barged into his CT home, tied up and tortured him, and - when his wife came home - shot and killed her.

The Connecticut Police Department announced that the 2015 murder of Connie Dabate, a 39-year-old woman from Ellington, has been solved. He is now out on bail but due to appear in court on Friday, April 28. "It is a great tool for investigators".

Richard Dabate has been charged with the murder of his wife Connie.

According to the Hartford Courant, Richard Dabate told authorities he'd driven home in the morning after receiving a notification on his phone, telling him that a panic alarm had been set-off.

Dabate is free after posting $1 million bail but is expected in court on Friday.

Per the Hartford Courant, Dabate told police he dropped the couple's sons off at their Ellington, Connecticut, bus stop on the morning of December 23, 2015, and that he left for work by 8:30 a.m.
