France's Fillon says Russia, US, Europe must act together against Islamic State

1 officer killed in Paris shooting

Police on Friday arrested three family members of a known terror suspect, who killed one police officer and badly injured two others in the attack at around 9pm local time on Thursday.

The euro inched higher in early European trade on Friday but remained nearly a cent off this weeks highs as investors battened down the hatches for results of the first round of a tightly-fought French presidential election.

Options markets suggest investors remain anxious about strong results for far right candidate Marie Le Pen and/or hard left challenger Jean-Luc Melenchon that would point to the risk of another major political shock for Europe in two weeks time.

The dollar gained versus the euro and against most leading rivals on Friday ahead the first round on Sunday of a tight French presidential race that likely holds implications for the eurozone economy.

The Brexit referendum as well as rhetoric from Le Pen has resonated with part of the French electorate which while not a high possibility Frexit is still in the cards putting downward pressure on the Euro as the stability of the Union is once again threatened.

France anti-terror prosecutors have opened investigation into the attack.

An attacker emerged from a vehicle in Paris Thursday and used an automatic weapon to shoot at officers in the center of the Champs-Elysees.

She mentioned Juncker's "love for elections", and that the French election was "another opportunity for democracy". For all of the French this attack is a tragedy.

Despite improving economic data, France's national debt is rising and the economy is barely growing.

Le Pen has said herself the European Union will die "because the people do not want it anymore". But a late surge in the polls by a far left candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon, has raised the prospect that she will be joined by a second eurosceptic candidate. In the paper, Rossignol writes, "participation will be the major issue of this election" and argues it would be easier for En Marche to attract undecided expat voters overseas than voters from the Republicans or the Socialists. Yet also under this scenario, Fillon makes it to the second round and there he could beat Le Pen.

Fillon, Le Pen and Macron cancelled their planned campaign events after the shooting.

The two top finishers in Sunday's election will advance to a runoff on May 7.

President Donald Trump responded to reports of a shooting Thursday in Paris by saying it looked like a terrorist attack. As her campaign tweeted out quotes from the debate, all eight of those chosen were about Islamic terrorism or the attack.

The attack appeared to fit in a spreading pattern of French extremists targeting security forces and symbols of the state, to discredit, take vengeance and destabilize. This has been the singular issue for her, and will be until the end.

Voters will cast ballots in the first round on Sunday of what has turned into the most unpredictable French election in memory as the gap between four frontrunners narrows. Still, for the next three days, all eyes will be on France.
