Samsung Announces Wemogee, A Chat App For People With Language Disorders

Samsung Wemogee A Communication Tool Aimed at People With Language Disorders

The maker of the app, Samsung Electronics Italia, said Wemogee is good for talking through images. The developers behind the app claim that Wemogee is the "first emoji-based chat application created to enable people with aphasia to communicate" and explain that aphasic patients are able to understand emojis because "they depict all aspects of emotions". The App replaces text phrases with emoji combinations and can be used as a messaging app or in face-to-face interactions.

Aphasia is a condition where the brain is injured and it causes the regions responsible for language understanding or speaking to not work properly.

According to the National Aphasia Association, about two million Americans have the disorder and 180,000 more develop it each year. Mostly caused by strokes, it can also result from neurodegenerative diseases or brain tumors. With this application, Samsung is looking to change the way people communicate.

Wemogee app comes with two modes, visual and textual. The former displays emojis and ideograms, while the latter shows standard text.

There are several apps in the App Store and Google Play Store that help users with special needs use smartphones and ease digital communication for them.

Developed in collaboration with a team of speech therapists, Samsung Wemogee functions as a kind of translator between text and emojis. While Weemogee is obviously intended for typical digital chatting, it's also helpful for in-person conversations: Passing a device back and forth might be cumbersome, but unlocking communication for those who struggle with words and diction is worth the inconvenience. They simply need to choose the emoji sequence they want to send to the non-aphasic recipient from a panel of visual options. The app is expected to be made available come 28th of April where it will support both English and Italian. It's coming soon to iOS.
