Tennessee teacher planned to take 15-year-old girl to Mexico

2 Inmates Killed In A Northern California Prison Over The Weekend

Cummins was arrested on a state warrant for aggravated kidnapping and he faces a federal charge of transporting a minor in interstate commerce with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

Tennessee teen Elizabeth Thomas and her former teacher, Tad Cummins, were were found in one of these two cabins pictured in rural Siskiyou County, California, on April 20, 2017.

Detectives spoke to the girl Cummins reportedly kissed on January 31, and she told them she had a "verbal exchange" with another teacher at the school before she went to Cummins' classroom, the complaint said.

Both were captured Thursday in northern California. Now that she has been reunited with her family, we will no longer identify her in our stories.

Federal court documents filed Monday show Cummins switched vehicle license plates twice, disabled his vehicle's GPS system, used aliases, altered his appearance, paid only in cash and used back roads during his almost six weeks on the run. In furtherance of this plan, the defendant procured a small watercraft and conducted a test run to cross into Mexico across the water from San Diego.

Tad Cummins is expected in federal court in Sacramento this afternoon at 2 p.m.

The motion, filed by U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hitt, explained that Cummins is a flight risk and his admissions to law enforcement "provide alarming insight into his mentality". He was sacked about a month later - a day after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an Amber Alert about the teen. The 50-year-old Cummins also took off with two handguns, clothes and a $4,500 loan. "And then she'll be sometimes just in a fetal position crying", he said, noting that Elizabeth had appeared to have lost some weight.

The federal charge carries a 10 year minimum sentence and $250,000 fine if Cummins is convicted. But Cummins' sister says that according to Cummins, the idea to run away was initially Elizabeth's.

More disturbing allegations in the case surfaced on Friday, when authorities released a copy of Cummins' criminal complaint.

Cummins left Tennessee because he was anxious about an investigation into his relationship with the girl, the court documents said.

"What do you say in these circumstances?" asked Kat Bozeman, Elizabeth's sister".

Quinn told NBC that she spoke with her brother three times over the weekend, and noted that he was "repentant" about his actions. Her father, Anthony Thomas, filed for divorce as well as a new restraining order against her mother, Kimberly Thomas.

"There is no doubt that she has suffered severe emotional trauma and that her process of recovery is only just beginning", Whatley said.
