White House names new Secret Service director

First on CNN New Secret Service director expected to be named

Maj. Gen. Randolph "Tex" Alles, who took over as acting deputy commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Inauguration Day, will succeed acting director William Callahan in the top job. He is now working as the acting deputy commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, and has been with the agency since shortly after leaving the military. Alles has also led the Air and Marine Operations division of the customs agency, which has more than 1,000 agents, according to the agency's website.

The Secret Service has faced a number of high-profile incidents in recent weeks, including a fence jumper last month who spent more than 15 minutes roaming the White House grounds.

There's an unconventional new GOP president in the White House, and Republicans have a lock on Congress. The New York Times noted Alles will be the first Secret Service director "in at least a century not to have served among the agency's ranks".

While the move is largely unprecedented, it's clear that the Secret Service may be in desperate need of drastic change. "I look forward to working with General Alles to help him succeed in his new role".

The position is directly appointed by the president, meaning Alles will not require Senate confirmation. The agency is now headed by Deputy Director William Callahan following the retirement of Director Joseph Clancy on March 4.

Clancy guided the 151-year-old agency through that period and during the intense 2016 presidential campaign, and his decision to step aside allowed Trump to pick his own director.

After retiring from the Marine Corps as a two-star general, Alles joined CBP in 2012. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly are the most prominent of that group.
