Why Chobani is suing Alex Jones, right-wing radio host

Greek yogurt giant Chobani is suing right-wing radio host Alex Jones accusing the conspiracy theorist of publishing false information about the company

The lawsuit, filed on Monday in Idaho, focuses on a video released by Infowars on April 11 which was pushed out with captions and headlines that claimed Chobani was "importing migrant rapists".

The 10-year feud between Alex Jones and Chobani yogurt has finally bubbled over into the courts.

Alex Jones has been trashing Chobani via Infowars for almost a year now because of the owner Hamdi Ulukaya's policies. The Washington Post reported that Jones published criticisms about Chobani's hiring practices, claiming that the practice of hiring refugees attracted crime and disease to the small Idaho town. Ulukaya has been vocal about his work toward helping migrants, employing at least 300 refugees at his Chobani factory in Twin Falls Idaho.

Jones' site averages one major story on Chobani a month, blaming the Greek yogurt manufacturer for most of Idaho's ills.

The company came into Jones' crosshairs last summer, after a story about refugees in Twin Falls sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl drew national attention.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones recently filmed a video for his InfoWars website in which he asserted that he "had over 150 women" by the time he was 16 years old (video below).

Chobani was founded by Hamdi Ulukaya, a Turkish immigrant of Kurdish descent who is a vocal supporter of immigrants and refugees.

Alex Jones and InfoWars ignored Chobani's repeated requests to remove the inaccurate coverage, the lawsuit said.

Barigar said in an earlier interview with Courthouse News Service that "refugee resettlement has helped Twin Falls and its residents share a welcoming environment and humanitarian support to those in need for these many decades". The video "repeatedly depicts, and in doing so misrepresents, Chobani's owner and Chobani's products", lawyers wrote.

Jones specializes in provocative conspiracy theories, calling himself the "founding father" of 9/11 conspiracies - he says the terrorist attacks were an inside-government job - and claiming the Sandy Hook shooting was "completely faked" and "manufactured".

Jones has been in the news for his contentious child custody battle with his ex-wife, Kelly Jones, over their three children, ages nine to 14.

"He also included that he was ashamed of it", David Minton, an attorney for Alex Jones, said of his client's Infowars comment, describing Hoffman's question as a "cheap shot to get something before the jury they can't get to otherwise".
