ABC head: Last Man Standing not canceled because of Tim Allen politics

'Last Man Standing' fans start petition over cancellation

Last week, ABC chose to cancel Tim Allen's comedy "Last Man Standing" after six seasons, and now they've offered some insight into their reasoning.

Tim Allen is breaking his silence on the cancellation of Last Man Standing.

"Last Man Standing", cancelled after six seasons for suspicious reasons as far as conservative fans are concerned, has brought a Twitter storm down on ABC and now a petition is calling for people to boycott the network completely.

The show had decent ratings, fueling speculation that it may be dropped because of Allen's conservative politics and a televised remark in March (video below) about being an oddity in liberal Hollywood, write Tony Maglio and Ryan Gajewski at The Wrap, an industry news site.

Tim Allen revealed he was surprised by ABC's decision to cancel "Last Man Standing".

"('Last Man Standing') was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings", Dungey said.

ABC insists canceling "Last Man Standing" had nothing to do with Tim Allen's support of President Trump. Why would the network move this show to the 9 p.m. hour on Friday when it is traditionally the least-watched time on television?

Have viewers seen the last of "Last Man Standing"?

The show has had consistently low ratings throughout its run, but kept getting renewed against expectations.

However, ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey denied allegations that the show was canceled because of its conservative leanings and said that the show was cancelled in order to make room for "superhero" programming, TV Guide reported.

"Last Man Standing stands out in the sea of network television sitcoms. It's family friendly. We're not holier than thou who did it this way, but it is a very different situation when you have a show that the whole family can watch together", Allen told UPI in a phone interview previous year. "You gotta be real careful around here", he told the late-night host.

"Your decision to cancel ("Last Man Standing") was politically motivated!"

The cancellations of comedies "The Real O'Neals", which ABC axed after two seasons, and "Powerless", which NBC pulled from its schedule before officially announcing its end, also shocked fans.
