Air Canada cutting ties with Aeroplan: What you need to know

The tail of an Air Canada Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is seen at a hangar at Toronto Pearson International Airport Thursday

Air Canada customers won't lose their Aeroplan points when the airline changes its loyalty program in 2020, but they won't be able to transfer them over either.

Like Air Canada, Aimia said Aeroplan members can earn and redeem points with the airline in the remaining three years of the partnership.

Until then, Air Canada is committed to business as usual by working closely with Aimia with the objective of providing consistent service for Aeroplan members.

What's changing? Air Canada says it will be launching its own loyalty program to replace the current Aeroplan program. They are not transferable to Air Canada's new loyalty program but Air Canada said it expects to continue to make its flights available to Aeroplan point holders after 2020.

In a statement, Air Canada said Aeroplan will no longer be the carrier's loyalty program after its agreement with Aimia - Aeroplan's parent company - effectively ends June 30, 2020. The same applies to travel on Air Canada's 26 Star Alliance partners, including Air China, Lufthansa and United Airlines.

Air Canada said it intends to continue allowing Aeroplan members to redeem points for seats on Air Canada flights after that time. The company will maintain their Air Canada Altitude status and Million Mile program.

Ottawa-based travel blogger Anshul Singh plans to burn through his remaining Aeroplan points and convert to Air Canada's loyalty program. These statements may involve, but are not limited to, our plans regarding the launch of our new loyalty program and the value or benefits that we may derive from such program, guidance, strategies, expectations, planned operations or future actions. Both signed a 10-year deal with Aeroplan in 2014. That's because he believes Air Canada will partner with a bank to offer a rewards credit card.

Singh hopes Air Canada will offer members more flight options.

Dvorkin also isn't convinced that in 2020 he won't be able to combine his Aeroplan miles with miles earned by flying Air Canada. A customer might have an issue with Aeroplan and be frustrated when Air Canada can not solve it.

However, Aimia CEO David Johnston said that isn't certain yet, as there's still discussions to be had.

He said the majority of Aeroplan members earn points not through flying but rather shopping while using those affiliated cards.

He added that with five million active members buying up around $700 million worth of airline seats every year, it shouldn't be hard for Aeroplan to make new friends.

He hopes that with increased competition, either Air Canada or Aeroplan might lower some of the fees for booking a flight using miles. The contracts with TD and CIBC expire in 2024, while the American Express contract expires in 2018.
