Alleged Australian cop killer Rick Maddison gunned down by police

Rick Maddison was shot by police after a 21-hour siege

He said the incident again showed how "complex and risky the job of policing is in this state and our nation".

Police overnight were negotiating with a gunman holed up in a farm house.

Earlier today, Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the aim was to negotiate with Maddison, who is wanted by police on multiple domestic violence and weapon charges.

Now the man, who allegedly shot dead Senior Constable Forte on Monday afternoon, is dead after taking several shots to the chest.

"An armed man remains outstanding and specialist police are responding", police said.

According to the Courier Mail, the man started firing at the officers after being pulled over by them.

An emergency situation has been declared and the area has been cleared of residents as police attempt to negotiate with the suspected killer, police have confirmed.

A police source says the shooter got out of his vehicle during the chase and shot the officer before driving down a dirt road at Seventeen Mile, just north-west of Gatton.

Mr Pennell said he was eventually evacuated about 5.30pm and was now staying at a hotel with his family as police continued to hunt for the shooter.

"Brett's death has hit our police family particularly hard and this incident is a reminder of the complexities and challenges our officers are confronted with".

Much is often said about the difference in police use of force in the United States and other countries, including Australia.
