BCCI ends speculations, confirms India's participation in Champions Trophy

Champions Trophy 2017

The BCCI has confirmed India will participate in the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy, ending speculation they would withdraw from the tournament.

The decision was taken here at a Board of Control for Cricket in India's special general meeting.

Holders India did not submit a squad for the one-day worldwide tournament by an April 25 deadline after the BCCI failed in a bid to halt a new revenue model being adopted by the ICC.

Acting president CK Khanna stated that May 8 is team selection date but joint Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary sarcastically said: "I am the convener and I don't know that there's a team selection on Monday (May 8)!"

The option to boycott the event by revoking the Members Participation Agreement (MPA) between the ICC and the BCCI had been gaining traction within the board prior to Sunday's meeting despite a number of former players opposing any withdrawal. The champions trophy is scheduled to start from 1st of June.

Even though Srinivasan was earlier keen on a pullout, he refrained from speaking about it after gauging the general mood.

With the BCCI and COA divided on whether India should pullout of the Champions Trophy after the ICC cut its financial wings by reworking the revenue model of the worldwide body, the letter came amid speculation that the BCCI was seriously mulling a pullout. "The squad can then be submitted to the ICC without prejudice to BCCI's legal rights", the CoA wrote in a letter to Choudhary.

The one-state-one-vote clause would lead to associations like the Mumbai Cricket Association, the Maharashtra Cricket Association, and the Cricket Club of India losing their full membership of the Board. "Team India should be provided with a supportive environment to showcase Indian cricket instead of being surrounded by uncertainty and confusion".

However, if the decision at the SGM is one which, "in our view, is against the interests of Indian cricket", the COA would not hesitate to seek Supreme Court's guidance. "The members were told that if they had any problem with the finance bit, they would have to take up the matter at the ICC's governance level", a state association member, who attended the meeting, said.

The CoA's directive makes it amply clear that the Indian cricket team will not pull out of the high-profile tournament.
