Cleveland Cop Who Fatally Shot Tamir Rice Has Been Fired

Timothy Loehmann, the Cleveland police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, has been fired from the department, Cleveland Director of Public Safety Michael McGrath announced during a press conference on Tuesday.

Frank Garmback, who drove the police vehicle on the day of the incident, 22 November 2014, will be suspended for 10 days for violating tactical rules.

In Loehmann's case, he was sacked for rule violations during his job application process, "specifically, answers he had provided on his personal history statement", Cleveland police chief Calvin Williams said.

22 November, 2014: Tamir Rice is shot and killed in Cleveland.

Garmback was charged by city officials for failing to employ proper tactics when he operated the patrol auto the day Rice was shot. "Patrol Officer Timothy Loehmann shall be terminated from employment with the City of Cleveland, Division of Police, effective immediately".

"The evidence clearly shows that these gentlemen did not do anything illegal", Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association president Steve Loomis told reporters.

While Garmback was suspended for violations related to the shooting, like failing to report his arrival to a radio dispatcher, the administrative charges leveled against Loehmann did not even mention the 2014 episode.

The officers' union said it was challenging the discipline, while Tamir's mother said both officers should have been fired.

A grand jury declined to indict Loehmann and his training officer Frank Garmback who was driving the police auto.

"This is a politically motivated witch hunt", he added.

An Ohio grand jury declined to criminally charge the officers in 2015. The caller said Rice was "probably a juvenile" and the weapon was "probably fake", but the officers were not given that information. Surveillance video contradicted his account, showing Loehmann shooting Rice just seconds after the patrol auto pulled up to the boy.

"Soon afterward, police drove onto the grass within feet of 12-year-old Tamir".

The city paid a $6 million settlement to Tamir's family following his death.
