Decision on increasing North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops in Afghanistan to be taken soon: Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg leaves 10 Downing Street after a meeting with Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May in London Wednesday

NATO's secretary general says the alliance is ready to send more troops to Afghanistan. He said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would decide "on the scale and the scope of the mission within weeks".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that she does not believe Germany is "first in line" to send more troops to Afghanistan, as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation considers a proposal to boost forces there.

"It will continue to be a train, assist and advise operation", Stoltenberg added, the reprot said.

US -led forces have been fighting in Afghanistan for nearly 16 years, making it America's longest war, yet the situation there remains a stalemate.

During an April visit to the region, Mr Turnbull said Australia had a "long-term commitment" to the operation and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani??? said the Islamic State threat was now relentless and could multiply like "cancer cells".

With President Donald Trump reportedly weighing the possibility of committing as many as 5,000 additional troops to aid in the fighting in Afghanistan, now is as good a time as ever to look back on more than a decade-and-a-half of war in the country.

The Taliban are once again in the ascendancy in Afghanistan after capturing territory since North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces ended combat operations in 2014.

With no U.S. ambassador in Kabul since December, U.S. military officials, especially Gen. John W. Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, and H.R. McMaster, a former military adviser in Kabul who is now Trump's national security adviser, have played especially high-profile roles, and both have urged more military involvement.

Between 2001 and 2014, it had deployed up to 1,500 soldiers for combat missions in the conflict-torn country.

The news comes ahead of a major conference of Allied leaders and growing speculation that President Donald Trump will commit thousands of additional US troops to the troubled nation.

The United States now has 8,400 troops on the ground.

The team was looking at the mission and the strategy holistically, not just in Afghanistan, but beyond that country, the official added.

The Taliban is likely to gain ground in Afghanistan this year and the security situation will deteriorate in the country in 2018, a top United States intelligence official has told USA lawmakers. "I think we'd probably want to do it". "The security responsibility was transferred to the Afghan security forces (in 2015), so why do we again need foreign troops to defend us?" asked Mohammad Umer Daudzai, head of the council's political committee. He noted that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members had not agreed in 2014 to spend 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defence "tomorrow", but to halt a fall in military spending and move toward the 2 percent target.
