HBO to air 'landmark' Princess Diana documentary, featuring Duke of Cambridge

But while Charles loved the gardens Diana mostly confined herself to her sitting room watching television or reading magazines

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have spoken openly about their mother and her influence in a new ITV documentary.

To mark the 20th anniversary of her death, the TV special will feature an interview with Dr James Colthurst, a close friend of Diana.

Paul Costelloe, 71, who worked for Diana for 15 years until she died in 1997, claimed Charles never offered her a bouquet and was "reluctant" to pay for her dresses. Areas including landmines, child bereavement, homelessness and HIV and AIDS, will be explored.

The film will be produced by Oxford Film and Television for ITV, which previously produced feature-length documentary "Our Queen at Ninety", which aired as part of channel's 90th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II in May 2016. The producer and director is Ashley Gething. The documentary will air later this year on ITV and HBO.

Speaking at a screening of King Charles III tonight, the 36-year-old told press including Express.co.uk: "I think the answer I always give about Diana is that it would be very unusual to have a story without her".

The HBO Princess Diana documentary is notable because it shows, in recent years, how open and vocal William and Harry have been in talking about their mother's death, which is unusual for men of their stature.

"They have lost a mother and what I would hope, and I think this goes for everything in the piece, is that it is treated sincerely, it's not a sketch, it's not a satire, it's not an attack". People say shock can't last that long, but it does.

Also, as the documentary features Prince Harry and Prince William, fans of the British monarchy will especially want to watch.

It's hard to believe that it's been more than 20 years since the beloved Princess Diana was killed in a auto crash in Paris, France.
