ICE says 90 percent of 188 arrested in California repeat criminals

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Fugitive Operations officers make an arrest during a five-day expanded enforcement operation targeting at-large criminal aliens illegal re-entrants and immigration fugitives

The only noncriminal alien arrested during the local operation was a Mexican national who had been previously deported and illegally re-entered the U.S., Kice said.

The effort focused on "at-large criminal aliens, illegal re-entrants, and immigration fugitives" who were considered threats to public safety, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a news release. "By taking these individuals off the streets and removing them from the country, we're making our communities safer for everyone", Los Angeles ICE Field Director David Marin said in a statement.

The ACLU said in its filing that in recent weeks there have been a new series of hunger strikes at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers in Georgia, Oregon, and Washington.

Drug offenses marked the largest category of criminal convictions, followed by domestic violence, DUIs, sex crimes and battery.

A Southern California woman has taken the first step toward suing county and federal officials after she says she was detained by immigration authorities for deportation even though she is an American citizen. Three quarters of those arrested since January 25 were convicted criminals, according to ICE.

"Those persons will be evaluated on a case by case basis and, when appropriate, arrested by ICE", read a statement released by ICE.

The arrests took place from Saturday, May 20, through Wednesday in L.A., Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

While the vast majority of arrestees were from Mexico - 146 - they also came from countries including Russia, Armenia, Thailand, El Salvador, Vietnam, Cambodia and Guatemala.

Memos put out by the Trump administration in his first weeks in office adjusted priorities for immigration enforcement officers, enabling them to arrest more broadly - virtually every undocumented immigrant in the USA entering the purview. “Hes been a valued member of his family and community for decades and they seem to be going after people for a conviction thats as old as 1992.”. Seventy-three percent of those arrested during that period this year are convicted criminals.

Homeland Security databases indicated the man arrested in Los Angeles was deported in 2013 after serving a nine-year prison term, but returned to the United States illegally.

Under President Barack Obama's administration, ICE was not allowed to arrest or target certain groups of people, Marin said.

The individuals who do not face criminal prosecution will be processed for deportation.
