Main allies of Brazil's Temer looking to future amid scandal

Brazil’s president ordered federal troops to restore order in the country’s capital following the evacuation of some ministries during clas

Few in Brazil appeared reassured, however, with one allied political party saying on Saturday that it would no longer support Temer's conservative government and another saying it would consider doing the same, whilst scattered protests have taken place in the country's main cities.

The case against Temer initiated after Jornal O Globo last week reported it obtained recordings of a conversation between Temer and a food company business leader, who recorded the discussion secretly, in which Temer purportedly endorsed the executive's hush money payments to silence jailed politician Eduardo Cuhna as a potential witness in a corruption investigation. But that changed last week when Brazil's Supreme Court approved a corruption investigation into Temer himself.

In a recorded message released later on Thursday, Temer, 76, said the nation has not come to a standstill and that Congress continues to vote on government proposals. Brazil's president ordered federal troops to restore order in the country's capital following the evacuation of som.

Brazilian soldiers deployed Wednesday to defend government buildings in the capital Brasilia after protesters demanding the exit of President Michel Temer smashed their way into ministries and fought with riot police. Calling out the army was sharply criticized by the president's opposition and some allies alike. The army was sent onto the streets after the Agriculture Ministry building was set alight. The ensuing violence resulted in dozens of injured people and several damaged government buildings. Tasso Jereissati would be good candidates to replace Temer if he should be removed.

Meirelles, a favorite of investors who took over the finance ministry past year and headed the central bank under Brazil's leftist former president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is seen as a prime contender to replace Temer. He could be ousted by the top electoral court next month on charges of illegal campaign financing in 2014.

But chances of changing the constitution in the midst of a political crisis were minimal.

The measure had intensified pressure on Temer, who is now facing requests for "impeachment" or resignation both on the streets as well as in political and economic sectors that used to be allied with him, due to a recent corruption scandal being investigated against him.

Other members of the party in Congress have said over the week that staying too close to Temer now could affect them in next year's elections.

Oscar Vilhena, a legal scholar and director of Sao Paulo's FGV law school, said that there is pressure on the judges to push back the date of the ruling.

The concern of Brazilian big business is that the corruption scandal has crippled Temer's ability to push through the sweeping attacks on the basic rights and living standards of Brazilian workers contained, in the first instance, in the so-called pension and labor reform laws that are now stalled in Congress.

The most vulnerable point of Temer's agenda seems to be his proposal to overhaul social security rules and make Brazilians work for longer to help plug a gaping budget deficit.
