Phoenix man arrested at Comicon had 4 guns, several knives

The Phoenix Convention Center site of Phoenix Comicon

A man armed with loaded handguns and a shotgun was arrested at Phoenix Comicon yesterday and told police he meant to kill "bad" police officers as well as Jason David Frank, the actor known for being the Green Power Ranger who is attending the convention, according to court documents.

Prop weapons carried into the four-day event are supposed to be inspected by security staff, but police say the man's weapons weren't checked. Weapons check can be a pretty perfunctory thing at a lot of comic cons, but I'm guessing that after this, security will be ramped up. Sterling avoided the stations where prop weapons are secured and marked, according to court records.

All costume props are no longer allowed, including foam and cardboard props, shields and sabers.

Police said he was wearing body armor.

Those attending the event can expect delays because there will be fewer entry points into the Convention Center.

Police were called to the Phoenix Convention Center when a woman who knows Sterling called and reported he was posting threats on Facebook about killing police officers and harming a performer at the Comicon event.

Sterling allegedly told police he was the Punisher, and that the firearms were for "self defense in case officers gave him trouble and that he would shoot to kill".

"Please leave [prop weapons] at home or in your vehicles, since they will not be allowed into the facility."

Those vendors selling weapons inside Phoenix Comicon will still be able to do so, however, all weaponry must be sealed. But those items have to remain wrapped at all times. But she called the added measures an overreaction and overkill.

Police will also increase the number of officers - both uniformed and plainclothes - at Comicon throughout the weekend. Has this arrest changed your mind about going?

Phoenix Comicon runs Thursday through to Sunday, May 25-28, 2017 at 100 N. Third Street, Phoenix AZ 85004. You can view the complete ticket pricing information here.
