Phoenix man faces possible charges for 2016 serial shootings

Police Charge Aaron Saucedo With Maryvale Shootings; as Many as 9 Shot to Death

A man was arrested Monday in a string of serial killings that terrified a Phoenix neighborhood previous year, a huge break in a case that involved nine deaths and a dozen separate shootings.

23-year-old Phoenix man Aaron Saucedo was arrested on suspicion of being the Phoenix 'serial street shooter'.

From August 2015 to July 2016 the shootings terrorized the largely Hispanic community in Maryvale in Phoenix, Arizona.

The shooter stalked victims after dark, police have said, picking victims who were either outside of their homes or sitting in cars.

"It's been said that a serial killer is like a chameleon, and that's what made this case so frustrating", said David Gonzales, the USA marshal for the District of Arizona.

"Today is a good day in the city of Phoenix", Mayor Greg Stanton said on Monday (8 May).

Investigators received a tip-off from the community and analysed surveillance videos, evidence from the crime scene and witness statements, which eventually led them to link Saucedo to the string of deadly attacks.

He was arrested on April 19 for what police now believe was the first murder in the crime spree, the killing of 61-year-old Raul Romero.

April 1, 2016: A 21-year-old man, Diego Verdugo-Sanchez, was shot and killed in front of a home around 9 p.m.

In the last four months, seven people were shot and killed.

Jesse Olivas, 22, (center) was killed in January 2016.

She said he preferred playing basketball with friends to partying.

"It's been said that a serial killer is like a chameleon, and that's what made this case so frustrating", U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in a press conference.

" 'I had a gut feeling it was him, ' she told paper on Monday".

Court spokeswoman Karen Arra says no information is immediately available on why prosecutors requested the sealing of Aaron Juan Saucedo's court appearance late Monday night.

Nobody was killed in those shootings, in which about a dozen vehicles on the interstate outside the city were shot between August 29 and September 10. They said there is now no known motive for the shootings.

Castro said she was happy a suspect has been arrested but sad because it does not mean her son will come back.

Smith was pregnant with the couple's child when Verdugo-Sanchez was fatally shot.

"The fact of them finding somebody, at least it was some type of news", Smith said.

March 17, 2016: A 16-year-old boy was shot and injured while walking in a residential area around 11:30 p.m. The firearm was returned to the pawn shop after testing because police identified who they believed was the prime suspect in the highway shootings, though the suspect was later released.

A woman and her 12-year-old daughter were shot dead in one incident; a man and his four-year-old nephew escaped unhurt in another, reports NBC News.
