Putin Echoes Trump Argument On Russia Investigation: It's Dems' 'Fiction'

The Latest: Putin arrives in France for talks with Macron

Russia's president also said that countries such as the U.S. and France have sought to blame Assad for the April attack in order to justify "to the global community why it was necessary to continue to impose measures to pressure Assad, including militarily". "You have asked how sanctions against Russian Federation will help in the resolution of the crisis in Ukraine's southeast". Putin emphasized the need for closer co-operation between Russian Federation and France, two nuclear-armed permanent members of the UN Security Council.

French President Emmanuel Macron is saying after talks with President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation that he believes they can work together on Syria and that he wants to forge a reinforced partnership against the Islamic State group.

As he stood beside Mr Putin, Mr Macron also accused two media outlets, Russia Today and Sputnik, of acting like "organs of influence" rather than objective news channels. "I will give no ground at all to that".

He took aim at the Russia Today broadcaster and Sputnik agency, calling them "organs of influence and propaganda". As Putin stepped out of his vehicle, many people pulled out their cameras to capture the greeting between the two leaders.

The two leaders met on Monday at the Palace of Versailles.

A tense atmosphere was, of course, to be expected after NSA Chief Mike Rogers confirmed that Russian Federation was behind what Macron claimed was a massive email hack of his campaign.

Putin did not react to Macron's comments about the Russian media, but he bristled when a journalist suggested that Moscow's hand was behind cyber attacks on the Macron campaign. On Monday, Putin again poo-pooed the idea as unfounded press speculation.

The Kremlin appeared to favour Macron's far-right opponent Marine Le Pen for the presidency during the campaign - a view reinforced when Putin granted her an audience a month before the election's first round. Monday's meeting comes in the wake of the Group of Seven's summit over the weekend where relations with Russian Federation were part of the agenda, making Macron the first Western leader to speak to Putin after the talks. Putin added that Russian Federation had been well aware of opinion polls predicting Macron's victory.

But in an apparent warning to Assad and Russian Federation, he said the use of chemical weapons was a "red line" that would draw an "immediate response" from France.

"We spoke about the Ukrainian crisis, spoke about the possibilities of settling the Syrian problem and, naturally, we also touched upon such a complex and, in my mind, risky situation as the situation with the nuclear problem in North Korea and with the North Korean missile program", the Russian leader said.

The first meeting of the Russian and French leaders lasted nearly three hours, with Macron saying that "Franco-Russian friendship" was at the heart of the talks.

"Big things are built over time", Mr Macron said. "We have agreed to have extremely regular monitoring", he said. Macron said he didn't raise the issue during the meeting because they had already discussed it by phone.

Mr Macron, in office just three weeks, was more direct than Mr Putin. Putin underlined the importance of securing the Syrian state, adding that it's essential for combatting terrorism. Macron also called on Putin to investigate the LGBTQ persecutions taking place in Chechnya.

Putin said that terrorism can not be defeated by dismantling a country's statehood.

Putin later visited a new Orthodox cathedral complex in central Paris.

The newly elected French leader called for a stronger partnership with Russian Federation on Syria, one of the sticking points in relations between the West and Moscow which backs Bashar al Assad regime.
