Republican Tom MacArthur Faces Furious Town Hall After Amendment to Repeal Obamacare

Anita Burroughs: I was shocked to learn that reps didn't read health bill

Several people asked about the president's decision this week to fire FBI Director James Comey and asked Rep. MacArthur to call for a special prosecutor to continue the investigation of possible Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.

The hostile, standing-room-only crowd aimed its wrath at Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.), who hosted the Willingboro meeting days after casting a vote that would do away with the Affordable Care Act in favor of the Republicans' American Health Care Act.

"I am trying to make it that folks like you don't have to worry about that", he told Soley.

MacArthur, who has cited his daughter's death as a reason he got involved in the health care debate, responded "shame on you".

Well, plenty of his constituents are none to happy, and his town hall on Wednesday night proved it.

Last weekend, two days after the House Republicans got the votes they needed to start the repeal-and-replace process on health care, a series of edits on the language of MacArthur's work on health care were made on the congressman's Wikipedia page by an anonymous user with an IP address located inside the House of Representatives. It would also permit states to opt out of providing essential health benefits such as pregnancy and mental health services. "It's not easy staying clean and with the help that I received in Medicaid it kept me clean this long, and I feel for the women and other men who are struggling with this addiction". And according to a spokeswoman for MacArthur, the edit came from someone on the congressman's staff.

"You submitted it! You were an architect!" one person yelled, referring to his amendment.

MacArthur was little known outside his district until he unexpectedly changed the course of American health care last month.

MacArthur has insisted that Americans with preexisting conditions still would be protected, but the crowd wasn't buying it.

. He had insurance but said he anxious about those who fall through the cracks. "This town hall meeting will allow the Willingboro and surrounding community voices to ask the congressman questions about his VOTE and have answers provided".

"You can not be charged more or denied coverage".

"Is rape considered a pre-existing condition under your amendment?" "My amendment doesn't do that".

"I like that when President Obama tackled this issue, he covered millions more people", MacArthur said at one point - one of many recent examples of Republicans framing their bill not as "repeal", but as a rescue plan for people stranded by the private markets created by the Affordable Care Act. The crowd yelled back that MacArthur just wanted to use the savings to cut taxes on the wealthy. "This is tax cuts for everyone", he said. The congressman's position on health care has bought (forth) many questions and concerns. They urged MacArthur and other Republicans to stand up to the president and call for an independent investigation into Comey's ouster and the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russian Federation.

"MacArthur, after listening calmly, insisted he wants to see the House and Senate committees complete their investigations before calling for an independent probe".

MacArthur said he planned on things being different. It was MacArthur who ultimately brought the conservative House Freedom Caucus on board to pass it. The New Jersey Republican who authored an amendment that helped the GOP-led U.S. House pass an Affordable Care Act replacement bill is set to meet with voters in his first town hall since the bill passed.

"Health care is now approaching 20 percent of GDP".

Outside the venue dozens of protesters held up posters reading "Killer Tom" and "People without health care die!" near a skeleton. They laid down on the ground and held up mock tombstones while someone dressed as the grim reaper stood over them.

During a five-hour town hall meeting in New Jersey on Wednesday, the congressman became the whipping boy for dozens of furious citizens who were outraged over his decision to advocate for the AHCA. He faced criticism from residents inside the event, which came as Democrats target him ahead of 2018 midterm elections.

"I do think he should release his tax returns", said MacArthur.

Another man, who said his wife had suffered from cancer and whose two children had pre-existing health conditions, told MacArthur: "You are the greatest threat to my life".
