Hassan Rouhani wins second term as Iranian president

On Saturday night, Iranians poured into the streets by the hundreds of thousands to celebrate the re-election of President Hassan Rouhani, whose message of opening up to the West helped him to trounce a hard-line challenger.

Rouhani, a 68-year-old moderate cleric who spearheaded a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, said Iranians had chosen the "path of engagement" and rejected extremism after he took 57 percent of the vote against 38 percent for hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi.

The two figures, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi, both endorsed Raisi, as did Mohammad Khatami, another reformist who served as Iran's president from 1997 to 2005. His success at the polls likely carried reformist candidates to victory in other municipal elections as well.

Early results show that reformist and moderate candidates have defeated their conservative rivals in most major cities of Iran, including Karaj, Isfahan, Tabriz, Shiraz, and even Mashhad, where the majority of voters usually picked conservative candidates.

During the presser on Monday, the newly-elected president would talk about leading issues in the country, particularly after the Iranians' massive turnout in the 12th presidential election and the 5th City and Village Councils Elections, the president's deputy chief of staff for communications and information, Parviz Esmaeili, said on Sunday.

In his first four years in office, Mr. Rouhani tried to steer Iran's economy away from the monopolistic interests of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the military force overseen by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmad Pourfallah, managing director of Secco Iran, a building-materials manufacturer, said Iran still hadn't reintegrated into the global banking system after the nuclear deal as rapidly as traders and investors had hoped. In Friday's election, 415 women won seats on councils in Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan province, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency. No woman has ever been approved to run for president.
