Trump handshake showdown: France's Macron just won't let go

France: Teflon Macron's minister caught in rent 'swindle'

The two leaders, who had a somewhat quick handshake at the start of their meeting, discussed issues such as terrorism and climate change.

Moments before, Trump had made some kind remarks about Macron's recent victory in the French presidential election.

On Trump's global tour, his handshake was first challenged (and defeated) by the president of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, but on Thursday morning the newly appointed president of France, Emmanuel Macron, made Trump's hand pay for what it's done.

"The occasion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit also allows us to have the first meeting, and I am very happy to be able to change many things together".

"I reminded him of the importance these agreements have for us", Macron said, adding that the pact was also important for job creation and economic development. Earlier this year he managed to grip Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for an astonishing 19 seconds in front of cameras at the White House. France spent about 1.8 percent of its GDP on defence in 2016, according to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation figures.

A combination photo shows U.S. President Donald Trump (L) trying twice to let go of a handshake with France's President Emmanuel Macron (R) as Macron holds tight, before a working lunch ahead of a NATO Summit in Brussels, Belgium, May 25, 2017.

Whether you call it the "alpha male handshake" or the "yank and pull", President Donald Trump's handshake has grabbed the world's attention.

"All over the world they are talking about it and we have a lot to discuss including terrorism and other things". Trump and Macron tightly gripped each other's hands, with Trump's knuckles turning white.

After the two leaders met, they reportedly had veal filet and Belgian chocolate mousse for lunch, which sounds like a nice way to recover from their bone-crushing first encounter.
