Venezuelan president slams Trump after new sanctions

Venezuela crisis: Venezuela Supreme Court judges hit with US sanctions

On Thursday, the Trump administration announced plans to impose new sanctions on members of the Venezuelan Supreme Court for stripping the opposition-led congress of all power earlier this year.

With the worsening economic climate, Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro, has been struggling to hold unto power, and has been going to extraordinary means to do so.

The measure also includes a ban on US citizens and institutions from engaging in any kind of transaction with such persons and denying them entry into USA territory.

Moreno was later accused by an exiled Supreme Court magistrate of belonging to the so-called "Band of Dwarf Judges" that worked hand in glove with top administration officials to manipulate cases.

Rodriguez also commented that President Nicolas Maduro ratified his support for the TSJ judges.

In February, the United States ordered sanctions against Vice President Tareck El Aissami, accusing him of playing a major role in worldwide drug trafficking.

Regional governments have been distancing themselves from the embattled socialist president and calling on him to respect democratic norms as thousands of Venezuelans taking to the streets demanding elections and decrying Maduro.

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles says he has been stopped from leaving the country to meet United Nations officials in NY.

"President Santos and I also discussed the deteriorating situation in Venezuela, and it is really in a very bad state, as you see and as we all see through the media", he said at a press briefing following a meeting with his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, at the White House.

The US treasury department has in the past sanctioned Venezuelan officials or former officials, charging them with trafficking or corruption, a designation that allows their assets in the US to be frozen and bars them from conducting financial transactions through the US.

Venezuela has responded by condemning the sanctions.

Venezuela's Supreme Court has always been filled with government loyalists. The court's constitutional chamber declared null and void eight National Assembly laws between January and October 2016, after just one such ruling in the previous 200 years, legal experts say. The most recent protests erupted in April after the country's Supreme Court tried to take over legislative powers from the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

The new sanctions come as Maduro is facing increasing global pressure to hold elections. Many saw the move as undemocratic, and though the court repealed the decree several days later, continuing unrest has claimed the lives of at least 39 people. They will be marching against Maduro's push to rewrite the 1999 constitution.

In the western city of Maracaibo, a 25-year-old was killed when he was crushed by a truck during a protest, the chief prosecutor's office said.
