Wawrinka storms back to win Geneva tournament

Japan's Kei Nishikori gestures after winning a game against South Africa's Kevin Anderson during the quarter final round match of the Geneva Open tennis tournament in Geneva Switzerland Thursday

He will next face Germany's world No. 33 Mischa Zverev, who defeated fifth-seeded American Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-5.

The top-seeded Wawrinka clinched by breaking serve with a fierce forehand crosscourt pass to beat left-hander Zverev's advance to the net.

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka advanced to the Geneva Open final by beating unseeded Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Friday.

Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori produced a spirited fight back as he bounced back from a set down to book his place in the semi-finals of the Geneva Open last evening.

A break of serve in the sixth game of the opening set was enough for Wawrinka to eventually take the opener.

Still, Zverev beat the third-ranked Wawrinka when they last played, at the Swiss Indoors in Basel in October. The Russia-born German's second runner-up finish comes more than six years after his first, at Metz, France.

As recently as March 2015, Zverev had a ranking over 1000 and was being overshadowed by his younger brother Alexander, now a top-10 player at age 20 after winning the Rome title last weekend.

"It was a great week for me here‎ in Geneva", said Zverev.

Cirstea won the first set on Thursday evening, Putintseva took the second and the score was 6-3, 3-6, 4-4 before their quarterfinal was suspended because of darkness at the outdoor, clay-court tournament.

The 32-year-old Wawrinka, who has struggled on clay thus far this season, on Thursday worked out some of the kinks in his game in a confidence-boosting 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Querrey, reports Efe.

Stanislas "Stan" Wawrinka of Switzerland returns a ball to Mischa Zverev of Germany during their final match at the Geneva Open tennis tournament in Geneva, Switzerland, Saturday, May 27, 2017.
