Air strike by USA military kills eight Islamic extremists in Somalia

US carries out air strike on al Shabaab militants in Somalia

The United States has conducted the first operation against the al-Shabaab terror group, allied to al-Qaeda (outlawed in Russia) in Somalia on Sunday, the US Department of Defense said in a statement.

Eight Al-Shabaab militants were killed in the Sunday strike, which took place in the Sakow region of southern Somalia, according to a statement from AFRICOM.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi confirmed that he had personally authorized the attack on the Shabaab site, which he also referred to as a training base, saying it was a successful operation which had destroyed the facility outright.

The on going operation aimed at disarming groups of fighters in Mogadishu is losing track as some clans have interpreted it as a target of the mainly the Hawiye clan in Mogadishu.

"We remain committed to working with our Somali partners and allies to systematically dismantle al-Shabab, and help achieve stability and security throughout the region", White said.

In March Trump ended Obama-era restrictions on drone strikes in Somalia, after the army said doing so would help protect U.S. bases and interests in the reason.

"To the members of al-Shabab, I tell you that we are bringing the fight to you".

The military said the strike targeted a command and logistics portion of an al-Shabab camp.

The militant group launched its own insurgency on major Somali cities in 2009, taking control of Mogadishu and southern Somalia.

The US attack was carried out by at least one armed Reaper drone flying from a base in Djibouti, a US official said.

The US military has been training African Union and Somali forces in the country.

There are periodic attacks by al-Shabaab militants across the porous Kenyan-Somali border.

There have not been any reports of U.S. casualties. "This will ultimately disrupt the enemy's ability to conduct new attacks within Somalia", he said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.
