Blast kills 80 in Kabul embassy area

Scores Dead, Hundreds Injured In Kabul Car Bombing

January 10- Two large bombs - one triggered by a suicide attacker - exploded in the capital Kabul, killing at least 38 people.

At least 90 people were killed and hundreds wounded yesterday when a massive truck bomb ripped through Kabul's diplomatic quarter, bringing carnage to the streets of the Afghan capital just days into the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The latest figures from the Afghan health ministry say at least nine people have been killed and 84 injured.

The US president Donald Trump is considering to deploy extra troops to Afghanistan to bolster the Afghan forces to help them fight Taliban.

There has been no claim of responsibility in Wednesday's attack, but it highlights the deteriorating security situation across Afghanistan.

The blast, at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, was one of the deadliest seen in Kabul, killing 80 people and wounding another 463, Deputy Interior Minister Murad Ali said.

It also said that it is following up with the UAE authorities in Kabul and the Afghan Foreign Ministry regarding the attack and its aftermath.

The US Embassy, which is close by, said "a large vehicle borne improvised explosive device" detonated near the southern edge of the diplomatic area.

Afghan officials say 64 people were killed and as many as 320 were wounded.

The BBC said Mohammed Nazir, one of its drivers, died following the attack.

The US embassy and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission are about half a mile from the site.

A suicide bomber first blew himself up at the rear of hospital, across the road from the heavily fortified US embassy, which provided the signal for three attackers with automatic weapons and hand grenades to open fire inside the complex, according to witnesses.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the attack came as the resurgent Taliban are stepping up their annual "spring offensive".

The blast killed an Afghan security guard and wounded some embassy staff, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Twitter.

The White House issued a scathing statement condemning the "atrocious" attack.

"I felt like it was an natural disaster, and after that, I do not know what happened", said Mr Mohammed Hassan, 21, who was attending a training programme at the Azizi Bank, half a block from the blast, and suffered cuts on his head and arms. The attack left a scene of mayhem and destruction in the Afghan capital.

China's foreign ministry said its embassy was partly damaged but that no employees or Chinese citizens were injured.

Numerous dead and wounded were civilians, and the blast prompted widespread condemnation of what world leaders and rights groups called a "despicable" and "barbaric" attack. "But the security situation is being stabilized by the ever-growing capability of the Afghan police force and the Afghan National Army".

For 16 years, US troops and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have been fighting alongside Afghan forces to crush the Taliban and more recently ISIS in Afghanistan.

U.S. President Donald Trump is due to decide soon on a recommendation to send 3,000 to 5,000 more troops to bolster the small North Atlantic Treaty Organisation training force and U.S. counter-terrorism mission now totalling just over 10,000.
