Convicted Murderer And Rapist Volunteers At School

Convicted killer Karla Homolka arrives at Greaves Adventist Academy

A convicted serial killer who served her time and has since been freed was recently discovered to be volunteering at a Canadian elementary school.

In the early 1990s, Homolka and her then-husband, Paul Bernardo, were convicted of crimes related to the rape and murder of two teens, Leslie Mahaffy and French. She got married, changed her name and gave birth to three children since her release in 2005.

Homolka now occasionally volunteers at private Christian school Greaves Adventist Academy, where her children are enrolled, the Montreal Gazette reported. "My daughter was playing with the dog of Karla Homolka, and I was right next to her, but I didn't know who she was". "How would you feel knowing that your child is interacting with a person who is a serial killer?" one parent told CityNews. She has reportedly visited classrooms as a volunteer, which has led several parents to approach school administrators with their concerns. Homolka held a drug-soaked cloth over her sister's mouth as she and Bernardo sexually assaulted her.

Bernardo was already a serial rapist by the time he married Homolka, but that once they got together, "there was some sort of synergistic energy" that made them more risky, Gregg O. McCrary, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation profiler who now runs a Virginia consulting firm told USA TODAY in a 2015 interview.

The school did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Canadian Press.

Seventh-day Adventist Church spokesman Stan Jensen told City News earlier this week that "the school board was fully aware of who she is".

Homolka wasn't charged over the death of her sister but her sentence took the incident into account.

She pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of French and Mahaffey. They have three children.

"It's like getting a kick in the gut, when you realise she has all of these freedoms and she participated with Paul Bernardo in the brutal murder of their daughters", Tim Danson, a lawyer representing Ms French and Ms Mahaffy's families, told CTV News.

"I think she's unsafe and I certainly wouldn't take the chance with my kids to be around her", he added.

"We don't want her here", one parent told CityNews.

One parent, who asked to be referred to as Lily, said she and other parents have tried to ban Homolka from engaging with their children, but have had no luck. He was declared a "dangerous offender", which made him unlikely to be released from prison, and so it baffles his victims' families why he had a parole hearing date set.
