Donald Trump Delays Moving Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

Donald Trump has advocated for moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, something many Israelis want.

President Donald Trump broke one of his major foreign policy campaign promises Thursday, signing a waiver that delays the move of the us embassy in Israel to Jerusalem for at least another six months - the clearest sign yet that Trump is serious about forging what he calls the "ultimate deal" in the Middle East. Written into that act was a provision that allowed the president to sign a six-month waiver that would delay the move.

"The focus is on how upsetting it'd be to Palestinians if the United States recognized Jerusalem as the Jewish capital", Oren said during Trump's visit to Israel.

Trump didn't give details on what his vision for a breakthrough in peace talks might look like, but notably didn't publicly push either side for concessions. The longstanding US position is that Jerusalem's fate must be worked out through Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

This means the embassy will stay in Tel Aviv for now.

Lawmakers later passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995, signed into law by President Clinton, which authorized the U.S.to move the embassy to Jerusalem by 1999 with one caveat - the president could indefinitely delay the move by signing a waiver, citing national security concerns.

Israel views Jerusalem as its capital.

We are glad that the administration has heeded the advice of veteran officials in the diplomatic and security communities, and chose to maintain the prudent policy of its predecessors on this issue.

"Moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem would not only not harm the peace process, rather the opposite". President Obama had renewed the waiver in early December.

A statement issued by the White House on Thursday, however, said that the president still intends to relocate the US' diplomatic seat in the country, and that the move was a question of "when not if".

"I regret the decision to postpone the embassy transfer, but it is certain that President Trump will keep his promise and transfer the embassy to the capital of Israel".

Signing the waiver this week forestalls any move for another six months.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump kept a campaign promise by announcing Thursday that he is immediately withdrawing the USA from a global climate pact.
