Germany's Merkel ready to confront Trump over Paris climate deal

The Latest: Merkel says countries will work with US

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the European Union is "more determined than ever" to make the Paris accord against climate change a success following the US decision to withdraw from the agreement.

Trump claimed that the agreement was disadvantageous to the country when pulling out of the landmark agreement on 1 June, but Merkel told the German parliament she was adamant about maintaining the deal. She expects hard discussions with Trump when world leaders meet in Hamburg July 7.

Merkel also reiterated her view that climate change is "one of the greatest challenges facing humanity - an existential challenge".

The European Union, Merkel said, must implement what was agreed to at the end of 2015 in the French capital regarding climate change.

"Since the USA announced that it would exit the Paris agreement, we can not expect any easy talks in Hamburg", Merkel said.

They also stressed the importance of keeping markets open, warning that the protectionism and isolationism symbolised by Trump's "America First" stance won't solve global problems.

Ross used his remarks to the German conference to echo Trump's outspoken criticism of Germany's trade surplus with the United States, which has become a key point of contention between the two countries during the Trump administration. Today, Angela Merkel meets with Berlin leaders of European countries participating in the G20 summit.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe was "more determined than ever" to see the climate deal succeed.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday that she was considering how to protect "strategic" European Union industries from Chinese investment, drawing closer to the position of French President Emmanuel Macron. "Mr Trump expressed himself very clearly and we reacted rapidly that we do not share his vision".

"I would like to steer the discussion in a direction which raises the question of a decision according to conscience rather than imposing anything", she said.

"It's not a fight against the US but a fight for common values", he said, noting that Germany still depends on the United States to buy its exports and defend it militarily.

News agency dpa reported that Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said during a visit to Moscow Thursday: "We are telling Turkey that we are convinced such an appearance in Germany is not possible".

President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that the United States would cease participation in the 2015 agreement to halt climate change.
