How major US stock market indexes fared on Thursday

The May jobs report was a bit of a disappointment

Global stock markets have rallied, boosted by data showing that the United States and eurozone economies are gaining momentum, lifting shares in London to a fresh record.

Investors instead focused on a report from ADP that showed the USA added 253,000 private-sector jobs in May.

Nine of the 11 major S&P sectors were higher, with the industrials (.SPLRCI) index's 0.35 percent rise leading the advancers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average .DJI rose 135.53 points, or 0.65 percent, to 21,144.18, the S&P 500 .SPX gained 18.26 points, or 0.76 percent, to 2,430.06 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC added 48.31 points, or 0.78 percent, to 6,246.83.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 18.26 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,430.06. The three indexes were on track to close at new records after touching intraday highs earlier.

In the bond market, benchmark 10-year Treasury yields were up 2 basis points at 2.215 percent, while the German counterpart was marginally higher at 0.302 percent.

The Dow rose 7.1 points, or 0.03 percent, to 21,151.28.

The government reported early Friday that US employers added 138,000 jobs in May, fewer than expected.

Construction spending was down -1.4% for the month and increased 6.7% for the year. Average wages rose 0.2% to $26.22 an hour, in line with expectations.

Lululemon Athletica (LULU.O) jumped 12.2 percent to $54.74 after the athletic apparel maker's quarterly profit beat estimates.

SINKING: Hewlett Packard Enterprise fell 88 cents, or 4.7 percent, to $17.93 for the biggest drop in the S&P 500 after it reported a weaker quarter than analysts expected.

Oil majors Exxon (XOM.N) and Chevron (CVX.N) were down about 0.5 percent.

A separate report showed that the number of workers filing for unemployment claims rose last week, which could be an indication that layoffs are on the rise. Its shares climbed $4.80, or 6.5 percent, to $78.19. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,454.13 for a gain of 157.53 points or 1.90%.

A solid jobs report will likely clear the way for the U.S. Federal Reserve to raise interest rates later this month. The euro fell to $1.1225 from $1.1246, and the British pound edged up to $1.2898 from $1.2892.
