Governor proclaims Elder Abuse Awareness Day in South Dakota

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today (June 15), B.C. notaries are bringing attention to the often hidden but prevalent problem of older people being physically, emotionally or financially abused at the hands of strangers, acquaintances and even family members.

While this year's theme focuses specifically on financial abuse, the sad reality is that the elderly face a broad array of exploitation that includes physical, medical, emotional, psychological and sexual abuse. "We have over recent years been studying and researching elder abuse within the closed doors of one's home. The World Health Organization has estimated that the prevalence rate of elder abuse in high-or middle-income countries ranges from 2% to 14% of people usually defined as 'over the age of 60 or 65 years". "If a family member is looking to take advantage of an older person, that can be hard to spot".

"The abuse of older people is on the rise; for the 141 million older persons worldwide this has serious individual and societal costs", says Alana Officer, senior health adviser, department of ageing and life course, WHO Geneva.

"One of the most important jobs of government is protecting older Pennsylvanians", Wolf said in the news release.

"If a neighbour, a senior citizen or even a nursing home employee sees any abuse type of situation, they have to go to the police and report what they see", she said, stressing: "We can not assume the victims will report what is happening to them".

ZANESVILLE, Ohio -, 2017 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and local agencies are coming up with another way to assist seniors.

"This all adds to the weight of our collective responsibility to act and to speak up for older persons when they are unable or unwilling to speak for themselves".

"It is, therefore, essential to continue to raise awareness to help prevent some abuse cases and to ensure that those that take place are immediately reported", she said. In 2016, there were 3,750 reports of elder abuse in Clark County.

"If you look into statistics of abuse, a lot of the time it's the intricate dynamics of the family unit that aren't working, so we at Family Services and the Red Deer Co-ordinated Community Response recognize that parents and families and seniors need resources", she said. "Are we showing them the proper respect?"

Elder abuse is any form of mistreatment that results in harm or loss to an older person. He said it was recently revealed that seniors in a Drummondville residence were going without baths because of a lack of personnel.

Elder Abuse Awareness Week started on Thursday, and runs until June 22.

Because of the isolation, Slater said unfortunate situations, such as an elderly man losing $1,500, will become more common.
