Matta out at Ohio State

Ohio State has called a 2 p.m. ET press conference with athletic director Gene Smith and men's basketball coach Thad Matta. He won five Big Ten regular-season titles and four Big Ten tournament titles. That is clearly not the case for Matta, the school's leader in wins (337-123). The Bearcats have played in the last seven NCAA tournaments and finished ranked in the top 20 on two occasions.

Some sort of back channel search for Matta's successor may start immediately, if one is not appointed from his coaching staff at Monday's presser. "Lately it occurs to me what a long, unusual trip it's been".

With a national search now underway, here are three names that could be of interest to the Buckeyes.

The obvious names for Ohio State include Chris Mack, Chris Holtmann & Mick Cronin. Smith also pointed out not winning recruiting battles when asked why the move was made now instead of at the end of Matta's contract. "I think it's the right thing for our program at the right time".

The former head coach of The University of Akron recently took over the Duquesne program in Pittsburgh, but a potential buyout clause in his contract would not be hard for Ohio State's athletic department to absorb if they chose to go with a coach familiar with recruiting talents in and around Ohio.

Matta mentioned "trying to get healthy" as one reason for leaving the job. As for coaching again, he said: "Never say never". He has undergone four back surgeries.

The school on Saturday said that JaQuan Lyle, the third-leading scorer last season, had quit the team last month. If it's the latter, it's hard to imagine Jent, a well-respected and longtime assistant for Matta, will be able to beat out some of the names that you'll see listed below. "That this program was run the right way".
