New Zealand and Bangladesh cling on to Champions Trophy semi-final hopes

Eoin Morgan England have come a long way since World Cup beating by New Zealand

New Zealand celebrate the fall of Jason Roy.

England put on a superb all-round showing to easily account for New Zealand and advance into the final four of the Champions Trophy in top spot in Group A courtesy of an 87-run win in Cardiff.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, England were bowled out in the final over of the innings for 310 - which Morgan thought was a below par total. New Zealand are banking heavily on Kane Williamson who got a hundred in their first match against Bangladesh.

The Ashes rivals will square up for the second successive edition of the tournament, with England in the enviable position of knowing after their two Group A wins out of two so far that they have already booked a semi-final berth in Cardiff next Wednesday.

New Zealand face Bangladesh in their Group A finale and will need to win and hope England deny Australia victory to progress.

Victory in this fixture would see hosts England into the semi-finals of the 50-over tournament featuring the world's leading eight one-day global teams.

Chasing an imposing 311, New Zealand did not have the best of starts as they lost Luke Ronchi in the first over, bowled by Jake Ball (2/31).

Both Williamson and Taylor appeared unhappy with the behaviour of the pitch, Taylor being hit on the helmet grille by a ball that leapt off a length, but it was trepidation about what the ball might do as much as what it actually did that stymied their efforts.

Former Yorkshire batsman Williamson fell to a ball from Wood that leapt at him from short of a length to take his glove for caught-behind.

In an all-round display from the England side, four of the batsmen made scores in excess of 48, while all five bowlers used took at least one wicket.

'They say it's roughly a four-to six-week injury, and it's more likely to be towards the six when I am back playing competitive cricket'. "We will go into the game with a very serious attitude". It's not about preventing runs anymore, it's about going out on the attack and making things happen.

Skipper Eoin Morgan (13) soon followed him as his 12-ball cameo was ended by Corey Anderson (3-55), who then did for Root - the Yorkshireman going at just under a run a ball. "They seem to produce limited-overs cricketers at will", the former Ireland global added.
