Russian Federation warns United States after downing of Syrian jet

Pentagon US shoots down Syrian fighter jet

Russia's ministry of defense has halted its incident prevention hotline with the U.S.in response to the United States shooting down a Syrian jet on Sunday, according to AFP.

Moscow is terminating its communication channel with the United States under a memorandum for preventing incidents in Syria's skies, as a outcome for the U.S. downing a Syrian Su-22 plane, Russia's Defense Ministry reported on Monday.

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that, starting Monday, it will track all jets and drones of the USA -led coalition west of the Euphrates and treat them as targets.

The U.S. said it had downed the Syrian jet on Monday after it dropped bombs near the U.S. -backed Syrian Democratic Forces conducting operations against the Islamic State group, saying that was something it would not tolerate.

In Monday's statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said it considered the downing of the Syrian warplane "a cynical violation of the sovereignty" of Syria, and "a gross violation of global law and, in fact, a military aggression against Syria".

Unlike the Western alliance, which operates in Syria without the approval of its government, the Russian Aerospace Force was called by Damascus to support the fight against terrorist formations in late 2015.

Amping up rhetoric against United States actions in the area, Russian Federation said Monday it will consider aircraft west of the Euphrates River "air targets" and track them by air and on land.

The U.S. described its attack as an act of "collective self-defense of Coalition-partnered forces".

In letters addressed to the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general and published by the SANA news agency, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the United States was trying to prevent the Syrian army and its allies from fighting terrorism on legitimate grounds on Syrian territory.

A statement from US Central Command said that the plane was shot down because it dropped bombs on US-backed rebels from the Syrian Democratic Front, near Tabqa in north Syria.

In a high-profile incident in May US planes struck Syrian pro-regime forces, which they said threatened US partner forces that were being trained near Tanf in southern Syria.

The Syrian warplane was carrying out a combat mission to provide air cover for government troops units, which mounted an offensive against the Islamic State terror group (outlawed in Russia) near the populated locality of al-Rasafeh. "That's why there's no threat of direct confrontation between Russian Federation and American aircraft". The Syrian jet was destroyed by the attack.

For several months the coalition has been backing SDF forces in a long-running attempt to capture the IS stronghold of Raqqa, where the group now holds four neighbourhoods. He said government forces began attacking SDF on Saturday, using warplanes, artillery and tanks in areas that SDF had liberated from IS.
