Russians claimed to have 'derogatory' information on Trump, aides: CNN reports

Russians said they had potentially

The ultimate alpha male president, who is definitely in no way a puppet of Russia, may have been vulnerable to potentially "derogatory" information at the hands of the Russians during the campaign.

Russian officials spoke openly about "derogatory" financial information they claimed to have on then-candidate Donald Trump and his close circle of advisers during calls intercepted by US intelligence, CNN reported. The source said the intercepted communications suggested to U.S. intelligence that Russians believed "they had the ability to influence the administration through the derogatory information".

One source described the information as financial in nature and said the discussion centered on whether the Russians had leverage over Trump's inner circle.

However, the same source cautioned the conversation "could have been exaggerated or even made up", CNN reported. But still, it means the foreign power was interested in meddling with our elections and having some control over the man who is now president.

CNN's sources declined to say whether it was about Trump or members of his campaign team that the Russians claimed to have obtained compromising information.

On Friday May 26 the Washington Post reported that Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke with Russia's ambassador to Washington during the transition period after the election to set up a communications back channel with Moscow from Russian diplomatic facilities.

A number of Trump campaign associates are being investigated for their contacts with Russian officials during the campaign, including former campaign manager Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former adviser Carter Page.

A report commissioned by a group opposed to Trump surfaced in early January that Russian Federation might have compromising information on the President.

Trump also tweeted Tuesday morning that the report was "fake news".

"There appears to be no limit to which the President's political opponents will go to perpetuate this false narrative", the White House said, "including illegally leaking classified material". If true, this would suggest why Trump and those closest to him have refused to release tax returns and other financial information. In 2016, Morgan Lewis was named Russia Law Firm of the Year by Chambers and Partners.

The latest allegation that the Russians could have "kompromat" about Trump comes after the Department of Justice (DOJ) appointed the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate the alleged links between the Trump campaign and Russian agents who interfered in the 2016 general election through hacks of Democratic Party and Clinton campaign systems.
