Saudi king: Trump visit a 'turning point'

Zarif Hits back at Trump: Foreign Policy or Simply Milking Saudi of $480B?

US President Donald Trump, Saudi King Salman and Egyptian President Abdel-Fatah al-Sissi touching a glowing globe to launch the opening of an anti-extremism center in Riyadh on May 21, 2017.

Trump in his speech called Hamas a terror group, leading to this response from the group that controls Gaza: "The depiction of Hamas as a terror organization by Trump makes clear the American bias on behalf of the occupation, and is aligned with the enemy's policies".

"But the path to peace begins right here, on this ancient soil, in this sacred land", he said in Saudi Arabia, the first stop on a nine-day tour that includes Israel, Italy and Belgium.

"There is a growing realization among your Arab neighbours that they have common cause with you in the threat posed by Iran", he said, at a welcome meeting with President Rueven Rivlin. "Love your shoes. Boy, those shoes".

Iran and Saudi Arabia have long accused each other of sponsoring militias aligned to their competing sects of Islam in conflicts across the Middle East.

Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia, at the start of his first trip overseas as president, has produced a number of statements that run counter to the harsh, anti-Muslim rhetoric from his 2016 campaign.

"Terrorism has spread all across the world".

To drain that swamp, Trump also emphasized some of the same tools President Obama did.

The president on Sunday implored Muslim nations to form a new coalition to defeat extremism during a speech in Riyadh.

According to Mr Trump, 95% of the victims of terrorist attacks are themselves Muslims.

But in addition to those strategies, Trump also emphasized the collective use of hard power.

Trump on Saturday signed a $110 billion defense deal with Saudi Arabia alongside Salman and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Some Democrats have sharply criticized that the weapons sales.

"Many people are saying it was wonderful that Mrs. Obama refused to wear a scarf in Saudi Arabia, but they were insulted".

Trump has also retreated from a campaign pledge to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, bending to the same diplomatic and security concerns as other presidents who have made similar promises.

The U.S. President urged Muslim nations to close ranks in putting an end to activities of terrorists in their countries.
