Srikanth in final, Prannoy's fight ends at Indonesia Open

Japan's Kazumasa Sakai celebrate after defeating India's H.S. Prannoy during their men's singles semi final match at Indonesia Open badminton championship in Jakarta

Srikanth had a 2-4 head-to-head record against Son, having lost to the Korean four times in the last four meetings but all that didn't matter today as he survived a battle of attrition at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC).

However an all Indian final did not happen as HS Prannoy's campaign ended at the hands of Japanese Kazumasa Sakai 21-17, 26-28, 18-21 in a 77-minute men's singles match.

Kidambi had been the champion of China Open Super Series in 2014 after defeated host country's seasoned player Lin Dan. It took the Indian badminton star three match points to finally outclass the world number 1.

"I think in the last point I was really lucky there".

Srikanth continued his form in the second game as well leading 5-2 before the World No. 1 made a comeback to close the gap to a solitary point at the break, Srikanth leading 11-10. The Kerala shuttler, who had accounted for superstars Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long at this tournament, led 21-17, 19-18 but could not wrap up the victory despite being awarded five match points in the second game. "All I did was trying to play more aggressive", Prannoy said.

Sakai, who is ranked 20 places lower to Prannoy, came out strong in the final game and built a healthy lead. Both Prannoy and Sakai were appearing in their first Superseries semi-final.

Son moved to a 13-10 lead after the interval but Srikanth slowly levelled par at 14-14 with a clever shot on Sons forehand. He is slated to take part in next week's Australian Open, where he is drawn to face Sakai in the first round of the qualifiers.
