Tech CEOs to visit White House to talk modernizing government

He signed a separate order in March to overhaul the federal government and tapped son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner to lead a White House Office of American Innovation to leverage business ideas and potentially privatize some government functions.

Executives include Alphabet's (GOOGL) Eric Schmidt, IBM (IBM) executives, and Amazon's (AMZN) Jeff Bezos.

A source says Apple CEO Tim Cook, in particular, is planning to bring up immigration, encryption, veterans affairs and the continued importance of human rights.

The council is made up of CEOs from Silicon Valley's most prominent companies, as well as over a dozen White House officials.

The White House on Monday urged technology CEOs to pitch in on President Donald Trump's effort to modernize government.

For most large tech companies, it's hard, if not impossible, to sever ties with the White House completely. Another question deals with machine learning and artificial intelligence (MLAI), asking CEOs to discuss how MLAI can be integrated into government services in the future.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the tech executives are attending the meeting to help the administration "make a more efficient, effective government".

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who once served as an economic advisor to the president, has already announced that he would step down following Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change. A memo sent to the leaders ahead of the meeting said applying for government benefits should be as simple as depositing "a check on your phone", according to The Wall Street Journal. Kalanick is also on a leave of absence from Uber. What's more, a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office said some agencies rely on programming language from the 1950s and "obsolete" parts.

In a document outlining the working-group sessions, the White House said the federal government should require "making it easy for agencies to use the cloud".

Despite being largely against Trump's positions at the time, there was at least a cautious sense they might be able to work together on issues such as cyber security and job creation.
