Theresa May tells Tory MPs: 'I'm sorry'

Gregory Campbell of the DUP celebrates retaining his seat in East Londonderry with his wife Frances

"I don't detect any great appetite amongst my colleagues for presenting the public with a massive additional dose of uncertainty by getting involved in a self-indulgent Conservative Party internal election campaign", Mr Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative lawmakers, told BBC TV.

With opinion polls showing the Conservatives had a commanding lead over the opposition Labour Party, May called an early election in hopes of increasing her majority in Parliament and strengthening her position in Brexit negotiations.

After attending Monday's meeting of senior ministers and Tory officials, she said: "We do have to make sure that we invite other people in now".

The chaos has weighed on the pound, which has plunged nearly two percent since Thursday, and London's FTSE stock index, which was down 0.2 percent Monday.

รท Downing Street announced that the Queen's Speech could be delayed by the need to reach an agreement with the DUP about what will be in it.

"Our position is clearly set out, it is clearly set out in a number of places and there has been no change to that", he said.

Ms May's spokesman said the Prime Minister was still committed to completing the Brexit process inside two years, as originally planned, and that Britain would still be prepared to walk away from negotiations without a deal if necessary.

But Ruth Davidson, the pro-EU leader of the Conservatives in Scotland, called on May to "reopen" the government's Brexit plans.

And while Theresa May was initially against Brexit, she also did a swift U-turn on this subject to become a strong advocate for leaving the European Union.

"Our members saw Brexit as a threat to the continued success of the creative industries, damaging growth and the UK's global outlook", says John Kampfner, CEO at the Creative Industries Federation.

Though May's office insisted Monday that there was no change to her strategy of seeking a clean break with the European Union, withdrawing from its single market and customs union in March 2019, that strategy is being questioned by leading Conservatives, threatening to reawaken a latent civil war within the party over Europe.

May addressed a packed meeting of the 1922 Committee for 90 minutes after her failure to win the election outright prompted days of speculation about her future.

DUP leader Arlene Foster rejected suggestions that the mooted deal could undermine a return to power-sharing arrangements at Stormont, amid claims from political rivals that the Government's stated impartiality would be fatally undermined. "She was clear she was responsible".

However, the business sector remained spooked, with a snap poll of business leaders conducted by the Institute of Directors in the United Kingdom finding a drop in confidence following the election.

Over the weekend, May's top two aides stepped aside.

Instead, the election obliterated her political authority and the party is trying to secure the support of the 10 Democratic Unionist Party lawmakers to assure passage of May's program.

People there said she uttered the word "sorry" repeatedly, and as the meeting dragged on was asked if she had time to continue, replying: "No, no, I've got time - I said I'd changed".

He stressed he did not share their ultra-conservative views on issues such as abortion and homosexuality, which have caused disquiet among many Conservatives.

The Tories and the DUP are considering a "confidence and supply" deal which would see the Northern Irish party back the Government to get its Budget through and on confidence motions.

London's neutrality is key to the delicate balance of power in Northern Ireland, which was once plagued by violence over Britain's control of the province.
