Trump to evangelicals: We're 'under siege,' will be stronger

President Donald Trump walks onstage to speak at the Faith and Freedom Coalition's Road To Majority conference in Washington Thursday

President Trump has broken the silence he maintained during former FBI Director James Comey's testimony Thursday, saying on Twitter that he was vindicated in the hearing that explored Russian meddling in the US election, its ties to Trump's security adviser, and Trump's dealings with Comey.

"You understand that. But we will come out bigger and better and stronger than ever, you watch", he said as the audience applauded. "Something about the way I was conducting it, the president felt created pressure on him that he wanted to relieve", Comey said in his testimony.

Lance Lemmonds, a spokesperson for the Faith and Freedom Coalition, said the moment was a "mistake by our audio-visual volunteer", and offered a statement to CNN.

But Trump avoided any direct reference to Comey's highly anticipated testimony about Trump's unusual efforts to influence the FBI director as the agency conducted an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Then the president added in his own words: "The entrenched interests and failed bitter voices in Washington will do everything in their power to try and stop us from this righteous cause, to try to stop all of you. Our values", Trump said.

"We have to build those numbers up because we are just not going to get votes" from Democrats, Trump said, blaming the opposing party with harming the country.

Considering that 81% of evangelical voters voted for Trump, it makes sense that he would mention the religious liberty executive order he signed in early May. He said they've gone so far to the left in terms of opposing him that "they're bad right now for the country".

Trump spoke on the first day of the three-day event, hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to "pro-family" values, according to the group's website.

Trump spoke about his actions to safeguard religious freedom and continued, for the second straight day, to label congressional Democrats as "obstructionists" who are blocking his agenda.

Trump declared that "it's time to put a stop to the attacks on religion" and vowed to "end the discrimination against people of faith".

"Everything he had to say was fantastic but it seemed very scripted, and I was hoping to hear more of something that I couldn't see on the news or read in the paper", said Melanie Harris, who works for a Maryland state senator.

Trump also reiterated his commitment to repeal and replace the Obama health care law.
