Anthem Inc, which has urged lawmakers to commit to paying government subsidies for the Obamacare individual health insurance system, said on Wednesday it would reduce the number of individual plan offerings in Wisconsin and in next year. Anthem, like many insurance companies who have opted out of Obamacare in recent months, cited market volatility and rampant uncertainty as reasons for its exit in Wisconsin and Indiana.
"While we are pleased that some steps have been taken to address the long-term challenges all health plans serving the Individual market are facing, the Individual market remains volatile", Anthem said.
A shrinking and deteriorating individual market has made it increasingly hard to price health insurance plans, Anthem spokesman Jeff Blunt said in a statement.
Anthem's withdrawal from IN and Wisconsin's exchanges doesn't immediately appear to add to the tally of counties poised to lack ACA insurers next year, which now includes 44 counties IN Ohio, Washington and Missouri, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Its members who have an individual or family plan will have coverage through December 31.

"MDwise's decision to leave the Health Insurance Exchange was also influenced by the growing uncertainty over the future of the federally subsidized exchange. Wisconsin families expect and deserve better health care coverage options and the time to act is now".
Democrats blamed Republicans for Anthem's decision. "Instead of trying to increase access to health insurance, they continue to put up road blocks", state Sen.
Republicans were quick to argue the announcement is a further sign the Affordable Care Act is collapsing, and Congress needs to move forward with plans to repeal and replace the law.
Anthem announced in early-June that it will be pulling out of Obamacare entirely in OH, a decision that would likely leave almost 20 counties in the state without a single insurer on the exchanges.
Several other insurers, including UnitedHealthcare and Humana, already have stopped selling health insurance directly to individuals in Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin, Governor Scott Walker responded to the decision. Wisconsin residents still should be able to buy plans next year through other carriers, said state Deputy Insurance Commissioner J.P. Wieske.
