USA shoots down Syrian fighter jet over Syria

As the attack unfolded, the USA military used a deconfliction channel to communicate with the Syrian government to stop the skirmish, according to the Pentagon statement.

The U.S. -led coalition, which has in recent weeks escalated its aerial bombing campaign in northern Syria and Raqqa province.

The Pentagon said Sunday a Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs on coalition-partnered fighters near the town of Tabqah.

The Pentagon said the shoot-down came hours after Syrian government-backed forces attacked USA -backed fighters, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, in the village of Ja'Din.

The statement described the Syrian military advance as a combat mission against ISIS militants, according to Reuters, and it said the confrontation with coalition forces was a "flagrant" attack created to undermine the army.

"The attack comes at a time when the Syrian army is making strides in the war on IS terror group, which is collapsing in the Syrian desert thanks to the progress of the Syrian army and allied forces", the military statement said.

In April, the U.S. Navy launched 59 cruise missiles targeting a Syrian airbase from two destroyers in the Mediterranean following a chemical weapons attack by Assad's forces.

The incident occurred in the town of Ja'Din, south of Tabqa, Syria, which had recently been retaken from ISIS by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an umbrella group of Syrian Kurdish and Arab rebel forces supported by the U.S.in the fight against the militant group. US -backed forces have encircled the city of Raqqa and captured several districts from the militants.

Tanf is a key town on the Iraq-Syrian border that has been home to a U.S. Special Operations training outpost for months.

The Pentagon says the coalition's mission in Syria and Iraq is to defeat Islamic State.

The Coalition, which is fighting the Islamic State, contacted Russian Federation, which supports the Syrian regime, by telephone to stop the firing.
