White House official: Trump expected to pull US from Paris deal

U.S. President Donald Trump has chose to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, Axios news outlet reported on Wednesday, citing two unidentified sources with direct knowledge of the decision.

Trump who has previously called global warming a hoax, refused to endorse the landmark climate change accord at a summit of the G7 group of wealthy nations on Saturday, saying he needed more time to decide. She said an announcement would be coming in the next few days and that staff did not want to get ahead of the president's decision.

A White House official says Trump's expected to withdraw the United States from the landmark agreement.

That's what the top House Democrat is calling President Donald Trump's expected decision to pull the US from a historic climate agreement.

Trump has previously said climate change was a "hoax" to weaken USA industry.

The decision would be a significant foreign policy break with almost every other nation on earth and a major reversal of the Obama administration's efforts on climate change, CNN reported.

A US decision to withdraw from the accord could further alienate American allies in Europe already wary of Trump and call into question USA leadership and trustworthiness on one of the world's leading issues.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned United States that quitting the Paris climate agreement could threaten the country's economic, security and societal status.

Canada, the European Union, and China have said they will honour their commitments to the pact even if the United States withdraws.

But this much is already clear: Trump's administration will not actively work to stop climate change.

CBS News confirmed the report, saying Trump had told allies he would be pulling out of the deal.

This means that in 2017, to tackle climate change, the world needs a more ambitious United States - not a country that will abandon Paris entirely, or at minimum, scale back its commitments to that agreement.

Still, he said that the carbon levels agreed to by the prior administration "would be highly crippling to the US economic growth", and said that, if the president had to choose between limiting carbon and economic growth, "growing our economy is going to win". Like his boss, Pruitt has questioned the consensus of climate scientists that the Earth is warming and that man-made climate emissions are to blame.

But he drew the line at the possibility that Trump will abandon the Paris climate-change agreement, which President Obama's administration endorsed as a key step toward combating the global threat of rising temperatures. U.S. inaction on greenhouse gases may eventually discourage other countries from continuing their own efforts to cut back, said Oppenheimer at Princeton.

The decision to withdraw from the climate accord was influenced by a letter from 22 Republican U.S. senators, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling for an exit, Axios reported.

The U.S.is the world's second-largest emitter of carbon, following only China.

Meanwhile, Democrats are urging Trump not to withdraw from the agreement.
