County spelling champ Ojukwu ready for national bee

This year's competition is already grabbing eyeballs as in March, a five-year-old speller, Edith Fuller, qualified for nationals - making her the youngest contender ever.

The competition, which brings together contestants from all over the United States and other continents, will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington DC.

Propper will find out after 6 p.m. today if her ideal score in the oral rounds, combined with her score in a written spelling and vocabulary test, will be enough to advance to Thursday's final rounds.

Google Trends map shows words most frequently searched for spelling help in each state. (If too many spellers survive Wednesday, the judges will use the test to determine the finalists). MI has trouble with another commonly misspelled word - "pneumonia" - which also tripped up Googlers in Maine, Alabama, and Washington.

She said she felt more comfortable taking the hourlong, 26-question written test than she did in the 2016 bee. You know, one of those books you can find in a library or bookstore?

On Tuesday, she participated in the preliminaries portion of the contest that involves a test with written spelling items and multiple choice vocabulary items.
