Wolff: Ferrari win was not 'orchestrated'

The result extends Vettel's lead over Hamilton - who recovered from 13th on the grid to finish seventh - to 25 points and the triple world champion admits it is a big gap to close.

'The auto was in a really different place to where it's been before, ' explained Hamilton.

"It's still second place but it doesn't feel bad good", he said.

Schumacher, the sport's most successful driver who won five of his seven titles with Ferrari from 2000-2004, famously built a team around him and was seen as the clear number one at Maranello. "They are pushing everything to make sure Sebastian will maximise on all of his weekends".

Lewis Hamilton believes he can not afford another poor weekend if he wants to stop championship leader Sebastian Vettel from winning the title.

"It's very hard for the leading auto to get jumped by the second vehicle unless the team decide to favour the other vehicle, so that is very clear".

Sebastian Vettel has played down suggestions the Ferrari pit wall orchestrated his victory over teammate Kimi Raikkonen at the Monaco Grand Prix. "First of all, they deserved the win, they had the quickest auto out there so as a team result, the one and two is good and congratulations from our side".

Despite that, there was some hope for Hamilton that Vettel might not win the race as Kimi Raikkonen qualified first.

"I knew that if I have any chance that might be it until I get the call because Valtteri was on fresh tires so it's likely that he will go quicker, so I just tried to push as hard as I can and wait for the call to box".

"They are finally where we were back in the days where you finish one and two and have to explain why the right guy won", he added.

"I think I have shown good performance this weekend and the team knows my potential".

Vettel, a four-time world champion and first Ferrari victor in Monaco since Schumacher, has now won three of the six races to Hamilton's two.

Wolff says it has proven tough to get the optimal performance out of both cars at the same race, highlighting Lewis Hamilton's struggles in qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix as the flawless example of their issues. "One more race like this and we will be much further behind".

"I don't think Daniel had priority over Max going into the race".

"This vehicle now is not working every single race we go to".

"But we still believe we can win this thing".

Brazilian Felipe Massa was ninth for Williams and Denmark's Kevin Magnussen took the final point for Haas. "Bit by bit we will try and chip away". The Briton was never comfortable all weekend, and a combination of a lack of pace and crash-shortened Q2 qualifying session saw him start the race 13th. Watch on Sky Sports F1 on Wednesday, 8:30pm.
