Jammu and Kashmir: Armymen allegedly assault police officers in Ganderbal

At least eight Jammu and Kashmir policemen including an officer were beaten and injured by army men at a check point and inside police station in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district during the preceding night.

Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said a minor altercation took place last evening between some army personnel returning from Amarnath yatra in civil dress and JKP personnel at Gund.

The Armymen were returning from the Amarnath Yatra.

The naka party of Gund Ganderbal headed by ASI Gh Rasool asked the vehicles to stop. The scuffle lead to minor injuries sustained by both army and police personnel. However, the army men called their colleagues from the 24 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) unit from Gund and Surfraw, who reached the spot and thrashed the policemen. "The matter has been resolved by personal intervention of senior officers.", Kalia said.

Sources said the injured policemen was admitted to a hospital and an FIR registered against the army.

"The army men got down from the vehicles and roughed up the policemen on duty", he added.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Army has initiated an internal inquiry into the incident.

Director General of Police (DGP), S P Vaid, took up the matter with the Corps Commander of the Army's Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General J S Sandhu.

The soldiers allegedly thrashed the police check post at Sonamarg which had stopped them from going ahead.

A senior police officer told Kashmir Reader that a group of 30 army men in civvies, whom police took to be yatris, first broke a police naka (checkpoint) at Sonamarg. "At Gund these vehicles were again stopped by SHO Police Station Gund and his men and were taken to Police Station Gund in order to avoid any ugly scene on roadside", said the police statement. However, this led to a heated argument and resulted in Army men assaulting police station on Friday night.

Former J&K Chief Minister and opposition National Conference working president Omar Abdullah reacted strongly to the incident.

In this regard case FIR No. 18/2017 U/S 147, 148, 307, 323, 332, 353, 427, 120-B RPC has been registered.

"The vehicles carrying the army personnel were coming back after yatra".
